Winter is the one season of the year when you are most likely to contract sicknesses. That might just be a minor cold–or it might be pneumonia. Here are some of the first steps you can take in order to avoid contracting any nasty illnesses this next holiday season.

Wash Your Hands More Often

This one might sound obvious, but it’s absolutely critical that you wash your hands diligently and consistently. You might be surprised just how often people forget to wash their hands. Sure, they tend to do it before eating or after using the bathroom–but there are many other occasions where you should follow suit. 

Wash your hands after being out in a public place where you touch a surface that many others have touched. Doors, railings, theater seats, and knobs or handles are all examples of this. Make sure to wipe down your phones, laptops, and t.v. remotes regularly as well.

Get More Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin. It also plays an important role in strengthening your immune system. By consuming fresh produce with high levels of vitamin C, you will be preemptively fighting potential germs. Consuming vitamin C while you’re sick is another way you can recover faster. 

Oranges and other citrus fruits like limes and grapefruits contain the vitamin in high amounts. Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C, as well as other berries. If you think you might be struggling to get enough vitamin C into your diet, you might want to look into taking vitamin supplements to avoid weakening your immune system.

Take Care of Yourself

Your body is a delicate and highly complex machine that is all interconnected with itself. Immune systems tend to falter and people tend to get sick when other parts of the body are compromised as well. Make sure to get consistent eight hours of sleep every night. You should also drink lots of water–about twelve cups of fluids a day is the golden rule. Staying properly hydrated can work wonders for your body. Make sure to also stay properly clothed and warm when the temperatures start to drop. Your mental health and your physical health are also deeply connected.

Be wary of influenza and the coronavirus. Sanitizing your hands can take the place of hand washing in a pinch. Masks can be useful when in crowded public areas. If you keep a generous amount of herbal teas, cough drops, and vitamins on hand, you’ll be prepared for whatever you might contract.
