Sources of Caffeine That Are Healthier Than Energy Drinks

Sometimes it can be difficult to make it through your long days. Staying awake and energetic can be even harder if you aren’t getting enough sleep. Caffeine can be a great pick-me-up throughout the day. However, energy drinks that are high in caffeine are typically high in sugar and are not very healthy. Getting your caffeine from other sources ensures you get the energy boost you need without the negative effects of energy drinks.   

Coffee 

Coffee is a great source of caffeine. Drinking coffee in moderation, anywhere between one to six cups per day, increases your alertness. Most people find that just one or two cups of coffee in the morning is sufficient to keep them awake the whole day. Another benefit to drinking coffee is that you know exactly what you are putting in your body. Coffee typically has much fewer ingredients than energy drinks, which are made up of many chemicals and unhealthy substances. You can even opt to easily brew your own coffee at home to avoid any added flavors or ingredients.

Tea 

Another healthier source of caffeine is tea. There are a number of different tea flavors from a variety of herbs, fruits, and spices. Out of all these choices, there are surely a few that you would enjoy. Because teas are flavored naturally, they have much less sugar than energy drinks. Sugary foods and drinks can cause more bacteria to grow in your mouth. In addition to contributing to poor dental health, sugary drinks like energy drinks can cause a sugar high, giving you a sudden spurt of energy that tends to dissipate quickly and suddenly. On the other hand, energy from caffeine in tea is much more steady and does not end in such a dramatic crash.

Maté 

Maté is a South American caffeinated drink. In addition to providing energy, maté is also known to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. This means maté is not only a healthier option than energy drinks but can even improve your health in the long run. Like coffee and tea, maté can also be prepared at home without any added sugars or chemicals.

Energy drinks are very convenient and quickly boost your energy, but they can be very detrimental to your health. There are many other healthy caffeine options that take only minutes to prepare or buy. Switching energy drinks with healthier options like coffee, tea, or maté can ultimately provide you with more sustained energy.
